The fourth annual Late fall Bay of Quinte trip for the Strait Line Anglers club was held on November 14-16, 2008. The first year we moved the date of our stay at Merland Park to the third weekend from the second weekend in November. Years previous we seemed to miss the bite and it was just a matter of time before we start hitting the date correctly. 2008 was the date.
The following were part of the festivities...
Team Trophy Taker: Joe Williamson, Ron Knopf, Bob Woods and a guest.
Team Willy Wonka/Wonderbread: Jimmy Rodney, James Rodney, and Brent Way.
Team Propeller Man: Kevin Hampson and guest Len.
Team Fish Tails: Dave Mergeson and guest Rob.
Team Calcutta Ron/Fish-U-Later: Ron Arnold and myself.
The agenda...
[glow=blue,2,300]Friday Jigging Tournament[/glow]
This year we introduced the first jigging only tournament on the Friday. Rules were four walleye under 24.8 inches, one rod per person, restricted from going beyond the Glenora Ferry and you had to have lines pulled by 5:00 pm. Friday was a perfect day on the water. Warm, light winds, and the sun was out.
Kevin and Len managed the biggest weight with four fish under with a nice 5 lbs in the bag that helped. They managed a total of 6 walleye on Jigging spoons worked slowly in the deep hole infront of Thompson's Point. Jimmy and the "Wonderbread" gang managed 10 walleyes dragging castmasters in the same area.
Ron and Shane put about a dozen keeper perch and two walleyes in the livewell using 3 inch Gulp Minnows on dropshot.
[glow=blue,2,300]Saturday Trolling Tournament[/glow]
The trolling tournament was simply two fish over 24.8 inches and one fish under. Lines pulled by 5:00pm. Weather change was the order for Saturday. A strong cold front was approaching pushing a low pressure that was laiden with estimates of 25mm of rainfall. Luckily the winds weren't as strong as forecasted with light winds out of the south and then east. But the rain came down non-stop.
The fishing was great, we finally hit it right!
Jimmy and the Wonderbread gang set up at Keith's schoal closer to the south side and Ron and I set up at the lighthouse on the north side of Adulphus Reach. Joe williamson went right up to the Bat cave on the south side. Joe trolled west and hit a fish. Jimmy trolled East and dropped a heavy not one hour into trolling. Ron and I started to drop waypoints on our troll east and started picking away at a fish here and there. Calls on the radio back and forth were consistently interupted by "Fish-On".
Ron and I found a trolling speed of 1.6 to 1.7 mph using turns and zig zags to trigger strikes. Initially we ran two boards working deeper depths on the starboard side and two boards on the port side running 35 ft. On the deeper two, one was a three colour leadcore with a Mann's Stretch 20 in Purple Top Firetiger (my own custom job) estimated to run 50 ft, and the other deep board set was set with Mann's Stretch 20 Doctor Death 175 feet back, 4 oz snap weight and then running 25 ft to the board. The two shallow rods were twinned at 200 ft leads using PowerPro Main line and 35 ft of mono leader. One was Taildancer 30 in Purpledescent and the other was changed up from Blueberry muffin to a Yo-zuri blue and silver. When the higher set rods were hitting more fish I pulled the 4 oz deep set rod and replaced it with another 200 ft lead but ran Doctor Death on it. There was little to show any other need to change as all the rods were taking fish. Rapala Taildancer Purpledecent may have gotten more attention then the others, but the yo-zuri blue silver once added to the mix was catching up. Ron and I managed 9 walleye, dropped three and boated four sheephead.
Team Trophy Taker and Jimmy and the Wonderbreads worked deeper sets for there fish. Using 3 and 4 oz weights off the boards. They also reported best colours being Blueberry Muffin, Doctor Death and Blue Perch all in Mann's Stretch 20. But also the other notable difference was they ran 1.8-2.1 mph. There programs lead to more Bigger fish.
Team Propeller Man trolled the cement plant to Thompsons and then jigged in the hole. They managed a few small walleye. And Team Fishtales managed a good Sherman's Point jigging fish coming in at 8.5 lbs.
It's a Tie!
Team Trophy Taker held up to the name as they weighed the largest eye of the tournament coming in at [glow=green,2,300]12lbs 11oz [/glow]and tied with Jimmy Rodney and Team Wonderbread with a total weight of 29 lbs 10 oz with two fish over and one fish under! James Rodney turned twelve that day and managed a Twelve pound eye for his birthday. Can you say "Happy Birthday".
Ron and Shane weighed 25 lbs 6 oz. largest 10 lbs 1 oz, but managed a 5 fish that were under the 24.8 inches.
[glow=Blue,2,300]Sunday Coldfront[/glow]
The Coldfront came in at high speed overnight. Winds out ot the west were upwards to 35 km/hr with snow. Once the cottages were cleaned out some of use went out for one more kick at a trophy, but getting down Adulphus was a no go with rough conditions and a shorter day to fish. Trolling and Jigging around Thompsons Point turned no results.
There are a number of pictures to come in from other cameras. Please add them to this thread.
The cottages are booked for the same weekend next year and we have the same cottages. 14 spots are open and we will make it yet another great weekend in '09.
