After being post-poned the last two weeks, we were finally able to get in the Strait Line Anglers annual Steelhead Derby at Queenston on Saturday.
As the sun slowly came up we were all greeted with what looked like aproximately 2 feet of visibility on the river! In all we had 26 particiapants and we were able to get everyone launched & parked before 730am blast off.
After everyone took off in various directions, my partner for the day Thom & I realized that the backdrift was left virtually deserted. Why not give it a couple drifts we thought?
Well as it turned out we ended up having a fairly steady pick most of the morning there, taking a mix of browns & steelies, including a kicker for Thom that unfortunately bled out a little for us, but we figured could still be a respectable weigh-in fish. It was predominately a roe bite for us. Plastic minnows, streamers, Kwikfish, were all given some drifts, but Thom’s skein bags were the ticket for us.
A few photos we snapped throughout the morning:
I think we ended up 7-9, with many missed fish.
We pulled out shortly before 2pm and soon the other boats came trickling in for the weigh-in.
Docktalk was that many other boats had great days as well at various other drifts throughout the river. One by one everyone weighed there biggest rainbow. Lots of fresh ooking 8-10lb fish were brought in. When the dust settled the final results were:
Jay Whitley 11.80
Kim Porier 10.95
Thom Genders 10.90
Denis Kreeze 10.50lbs
Gerald Koestier 9.60
Perry porier 9.20
Paul Castellano 9.20
Was nice to see some familiar faces and meet a few other new folks. We sure lucked out with great conditions before more winter mess arrives today.
Myself, after barely fishing at all for the past few months, I was thrilled by how well the day went for Thom & I. My boat "Freetime" ran great and I am sure was happy to be pulled out of the garage for a day in the river
Full results, more photos and even a video of the weigh-in should be up later on the club's website later today. www.straitlineanglers.com I'd also like to extend an open invite to all to check out our next monthly meeting at our new location, the Grimsby Legion on Tuesday Jan 4, 7pm. We are excited to have Grant McAllister of G2 Angling, ( www.G2Angling.com ) who will give a seminar on Ice Fishing the Bay Of Quinte
